SIERRA NEVADA/SPECIALIZED CRITERIUM - PODIUM

Lori and I made the trek to Folsom to race in 96 degrees; heat tolerance does not come as part of my Latvian/English genetic pkg. The course was wide and very smooth with fast turns. The field size was about 25 including Jenni Tafoya and Tracey Ford. Lori, in typical style got to turn 1 in first position followed by Jenni T and myself. We rotated through for 2 laps just to set a good pace. The pace was generally slow with a few attacks which were brought back mostly by Newman’s Own – Ginger Buller. The heat was harsh and I definitely was not feeling very peppy. Lori went for a prime, just to get pipped at the post by Jenni T. Two laps to go the pace picked up I was sitting in about 6th position, not great. Jenni T and Tracey moved up on the outside, Lori jumped on Jenni’s wheel and someone jumped on hers and it wasn’t me! I made an effort to get her wheel back but by that time Jenni had accelerated with Tracey on her wheel they were on there way to a great lead out.
Lori put in a solid effort to get me up there. I found myself in about 6th position coming around the final turn – not good! I passed a few gals in the sprint but couldn’t catch a Webcor gal who deservingly got 2nd place. I was 3rd. Not bad for my first race back after Tulsa. I had not been feeling great since then but it was great to be racing again. Always fun racing with Lori & Jenni and Tracey. - Nicola
