LORRAINE JARVIS - MASTERS NATIONAL TRACK CHAMPION!

Times change, people change and our goals change. Ten years ago, I was single and hanging out on some volleyball court (sand/grass/hard court) hitting, setting and most importantly for my relatively short height, playing solid defense. The goal was to have fun with my friends, stay in shape and WIN!

I guess the goal is pretty much the same. Just a different sport.

Fast forward to 2003. I’m married, running and cycling (mostly mountain biking) for fitness and fun. And trying to get a little more focused on my career after years of traveling and being a volleyball bum. My first visit to the track was to practice team pursuit with a few women who were looking for a 4th to complete their roster. I probably would have passed on this opportunity, except that my husband, who raced on the track all though college convinced me to try it. The biggest obstacle was actually driving to San Jose, but once I got there, it took about 5 minutes and I was hooked. While training with those women for the State Championship, my husband suggested that I also race the individual pursuit. Then he said “… well since you’ll be here, you might as well race the 500m sprint.” That’s where I tried to put my foot down. I considered myself a hill climbing endurance rider, not a sprinter!!!

It took me a while, but I finally figured out that I am a short distance sprinter. And with Kelly’s meticulous, scientific method of training, I gradually got faster and faster in the 500m.

Today Kelly’s coaching, as well as my new Seigler bike, my Super fast Cane Creek wheels, Clif for fuel and all other things aero (Rudy Project helmet, Voler skinsuit and shoe covers) I had a personal best 500m time of 40.07, and won the National Championship.

Next year I’m going after the World Championship title. I’m going to Worlds this year, but this is only a practice leading up to next year so no pressure!

Thanks Team!
